Abstraction Chardonnay

The vineyard is located in the Carneros AVA, in the same area as the Sangiacomo Vineyards. The vines grow on Huichica Loam and Zamora Silty Clay Loam and are gently cooled by the San Francisco Bay breezes. Two Dijon clones, 76 and 809, are grown on the property.

Clone 809 was harvested the 8th of September 2018. Clone 76 was harvested on the 21st of September. Both clones were gently pressed whole cluster and, following a settling in the tank, the juice was transferred to barrels where it fermented slowly and happily. Lees were stirred during the early part of barrel aging.

The wine was bottled on the 24th of April 2019. Our intent was to make a crisp refreshing wine, letting the fruit shine on its own. In that spirit, only 21% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation.

The 2 clones bring different notes to the wine:

  • Clone 809 (26.2%) brings more tropical notes with aromas of apricot, quince and pineapple
  • Clone 76 was fermented in French oak barrels (51.2%) and stainless-steel barrels (22.5%). The oak barrels aged component brings notes of apple, lemon rind, hints of clove and richness to the mouthfeel. The stainless barrels bring a more muted, but very interesting, notes of licorice, verbena and hazelnut and a sharper mouthfeel

The wine plays between tension and seductiveness.

Pale straw color.

Aromas start with fresh cut apple, Asian pear and chalk. As the wine opens it reveal notes of apricot, hazelnut, lemon rind, licorice and hints of verbena.

The mouthfeel initially has very crisp and sharp entry followed by a silky mid palate. As the wine opens, richness and more silkiness appear along with notes of apricot and pineapple and the finish starts to extend.
